One of the big ideas behind Spirit Superfood: 37 Days of Biblical Wisdom Broken Down and Easy to Understand – Like a Daily Superfood Smoothie for your Spirit is the fact that many Christians have a hard time reading their Bible! It is not that a lot of us are lazy or don’t want to learn. It is just that the Bible isn’t all that easy to understand.
In fact, if it was so easy, then why do you see a lot of pastors attending these big Bible colleges? Why do a lot of churches try to pack a lot into their Bible study classes?
It is because the Bible really does deserve all that dedication because it has just so much to teach us (be it about God, Jesus, creation, salvation, etc).
So, while this little blog post can’t teach everything, it will give you a handy, shorthand guide for some important, commonly used Bible concepts. That way, when you start taking more formal Bible education, you’ll be a little more prepared. Alternatively, it can also just make it easier to open the Bible and read it regularly without fear of misunderstanding or confusion.
1. Scripture
Naturally, the first thing is knowing what is meant when the Bible itself says “Scripture.” We read plenty of passages where people say they are citing or paraphrasing Scripture. Jesus Himself does this (like during the time when He was tempted in the desert).
Scripture is God’s Word. It includes both the Old and the New Testament. But sometimes, people will ask, “How can Jesus be reciting Scripture when there wasn’t even a Bible back then?” That is not 100% true. Parts of Scripture (like the 10 Commandments) were already written. That is still Scripture.
2. Spirit
The Bible talks a lot about having a sense of the spirit and knowing the importance of spiritual things. 1 Peter 2:2-3 says: Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.
Most people believe that spirit is anything that’s not material. But if you’re Christian, it has a much bigger meaning than that. It is why your prayer life and your connection to God are so important because it is what nourishes your spirit. It is what strengthens you in spite of all the burdens and persecution the world throws at you. It is what allows you to see the wisdom in Scripture and even get a good sense of the spirit in others.
3. Theology
And now, we have that big word that really has people worried about not having big enough brains to study the Bible.
To be fair, that fear is understandable! We have a lot of intelligent, wise, and scholarly folk who love God and study theology to know Him better (while also having a lot to teach us)! They get all the PhDs and go to really big conferences that dig very deep right next to serious historians about how to better understand who Jesus was.
That’s enough reason to pay attention to what they say. However, always remember that theology is just one way to glorify God by knowing Him. It’s good for every Christian’s understanding, but what’s also important is to keep praying and listening to Jesus!
